During the men’s Royal Rumble match that opened the Royal Rumble event, Rey Mysterio was the 17th entrant in the match. However, Ray never appeared in the match.
The 18th man to enter the Royal Rumble was Rey’s son Dominik Mysterio, who turned him over to join the Judgment Day group months earlier. Rey was sent to SmackDown to get away from Dominic, but the storyline continued when Dominik attacked Rey at his house, and after that, Rey arrested Dominik for his behavior on Christmas Eve.
When Dominik entered the Royal Rumble match, he wore a Rey mask on his head and threw it down on his way to the ring. The story was done in such a way that it looked like Dominik beat up Rey and stole his mask, although we never saw Rey on the show.
In an update on the situation on his radio show, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer explained how Rey suffered an injury on Friday’s SmackDown that was so bad that he was unable to participate in the men’s Royal Rumble match. As Meltzer discussed, WWE likely wanted to push the storyline that Dominik injured Rey and therefore missed the Rumble, rather than replacing him with another wrestler.

Dominik Mysterio Came in the place of Rey Mysterio
“Rey Mysterio was injured last night in a match with Karrion Kross at the SmackDown tapings in Laredo. He was supposed to be in the Rumble, but the spot was changed, and then what happened was they did a spot where he came out. He didn’t come out and then Dominik came out.
“I think they had to do some flirting with him at the Rumble to set up the WrestleMania match, but obviously they couldn’t because of Rey’s injury.”
“Dominik, I think, was the idea that he came up with Rey’s mask with the idea that somehow Judgment Day could beat Rey backstage and Dominik had the mask and that’s how they’re going to do the angle”.
“Hopefully, Rey’s injury is nothing serious, but I think it was serious enough that he couldn’t do what he planned to do in the match.”
As mentioned above, Rey is expected to have a debut match with Dominik at WrestleMania. So far, Dominik has killed Rey several times, while Rey has yet to kill his son on purpose. This may change in the coming weeks.
