‘Baida’ made in Gorakhpur’s village is impressing everyone with its science-fiction story, the filmmaker told how it was shot

Baida

A few days ago, the trailer of the Hindi film ‘Baida’ was released which has increased the excitement of Indian film lovers. People are surprised to see the visuals, concept and music of this science-fiction film. On social media, people are comparing it with films like ‘Tumbaad’ and ‘Kantara’ which were made on a very low budget and have become cult.

‘Baida’ is directed by Puneet Sharma and Sudhanshu Rai is the lead actor as well as the producer. Those who are fond of watching stories on YouTube might know Sudhanshu as ‘Kahanikaar‘. ‘Baida’ is Sudhanshu’s first film, but just by watching its trailer, you get caught in the grip of its story.

Looking at the production value of ‘Baida’, it is very difficult to say that this film has been made on a very low budget compared to the average production budget of Bollywood films, which is 20-30 crores. But the way Sudhanshu chose to shoot ‘Baida’ on this scale with his limited resources is similar to Rishab Shetty’s Kannada blockbuster ‘Kantara’.

He shot the film ‘Baida’ in his village

Actor-director-producer of ‘Kantara’ Rishab Shetty was successful in making the film on a low budget because he shot it in his village. Similarly, Sudhanshu has also shot ‘Baida’ in his village.

In an exclusive interview, Sudhanshu told us that he is a resident of the Gola Bazar area of Gorakhpur and he has shot 85% of his films in this area. The village named Panghata in the trailer of ‘Baida’ where the story is taking place is the changed name of Sudhanshu’s village, Bankata. Sudhanshu, who studied in Delhi, said that he needed a lot of local help to complete the vision he had thought of for his film on a low budget.

Explaining this trick to control the budget, Sudhanshu said, ‘I am the lead actor and the writer too, so the money for writing was saved. We saved all the money on location because we shot in our village. Some are relatives, some are our land, and some are our farms. We got the artwork done by local people.’

The film crew stayed at relatives’ house

Sudhanshu’s father also played a big role in bringing ‘Baida’ to the screen. Sudhanshu said, ‘My father met the people there whose previous generations used to make huts since the British era. They have made real bamboo huts, like the ones made in those times. We have saved a lot of expenses in this, but still, there is some expense.’

Explaining how shooting in his village was helpful for Sudhanshu, he said, ‘A crew of about 100 people went for the shoot. We made them stay at our house, relatives’ house. People there are always supportive and now many people’s houses are empty because the children have gone to Bangalore and Mumbai-Delhi to earn money. So, someone was an uncle, someone was a brother… 4 people were accommodated at someone’s house, 10 people at someone’s house. We had hired a cook to cook food and the food there is always delicious.

This support and benefit of shooting in one’s village is received.’ For the people of Gorakhpur, Sudhanshu said that the second shot in the teaser of ‘Baida’ is of the Saryu river, to which the local people relate a lot. He has also shot near the ancient temple of Bisra area.

Bhojpuri is also used along with Hindi in the film

‘Baida’ is a Hindi film, but since the story is set in Gorakhpur, Sudhanshu has often used Bhojpuri to give it a local flavour. He said, ‘I have used Bhojpuri in ‘Baida’ on my own will, and that too is in the same raw format. There is also a Bhojpuri song in this film, which is very clean and good.’

Sudhanshu says that with this film, a team of capable technicians has joined him and in the future, he wants to make such projects in his mother tongue Bhojpuri along with Hindi, which are very different from the norm.
