John Wick Chapter 4 Movie Review: When Keanu Reeves Suits to Kill

The fourth installment of the John Wick Saga (JW4) is the longest in the franchise at 2 hours 49 minutes. But also the most exciting in terms of cinematic experience. It all started with a widowed ex-assassin seeking revenge for the death of his beagle Daisy – a gift from his wife – in the first John Wick film. In John Wick Chapter 4, the saga of revenge evolves into an action epic set across continents, featuring many interesting characters and captivating action sequences.

As the franchise’s titular hero, Reeves gets ready once again before it all goes guns blazing and leaves a trail of corpses. John Wick 4 is not based on the previous story of John Wick. It hardly matters as the audience is immediately drawn into the whirlwind of gunfire, which is visually and expertly choreographed. A mournful, laid-back hitman appears dog-tired and demands his “freedom” from the High Table, a ruling organization of assassins.

The road to “freedom” is full of conflicts with old and new enemies. He also has a crown on his head that keeps growing. So does the body count? However, Wick is not without powerful alliances. In this absurdly dangerous franchise world, there are rules and forces that test the “community” time and time again. They turn old friends into enemies. But do these forces really destroy the sense of “community”?

How will Bloodseed end is a question Vic has been asked more than once. Despite finding a way out, he has no answer. Reeves also brings his vulnerability, weariness, grace, and toughness to the role of the deadly assassin who wants to be remembered as a “loving husband.”

Wick’s latest outing stands out for its gritty poetry – a dance of death in a stunning blend of stunning choreography, visuals, and music (produced by Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard). Each of these sets is set in a spectacular location in New York, Osaka, Berlin, and Paris.

While the plot-line remains sketchy, pithy one-liners add satirical humor to the action-packed proceedings.

The neo-noir cinematic world of Chapter 4, originally created by Derek Kolstad, has many interesting characters. Akira (Sawayama) is introduced to this world as a fighter haunted by the murder of his father Koji (Sanada). There’s a tracker who identifies himself as Mr. Nobody (Anderson) and is accompanied by his “emotional support” dog. What heightens the conflict and adds emotional weight is the admission of blind assassin Caine (Yen), an old friend of Wick.

Those who have invested in the franchise will find that John Wick Chapter 4 – combining the spectacular action of martial arts with intense gun battles – is enough to keep them engaged. They will also be reassured to know that Vic still brutally shoots anyone who harms the dog.
