US and Israeli Strikes on Iran Send Shockwaves Through Tehran and Beyond

US and Israeli strikes on Iran continued for a second straight day, with Israel saying its forces had struck targets “in the heart of Tehran.”

At the same time, Iran stepped up its retaliation, launching attacks on Israel and several Gulf Arab countries. Iranian officials vowed to intensify their response following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Several senior figures from his leadership circle.

At least nine people died after an attack struck an Israeli city, with strikes also hitting military and civilian sites elsewhere. Targets included a US naval base in Bahrain and Dubai’s international airport in the United Arab Emirates.

On Saturday, the first day of the assault, US and Israeli forces struck multiple locations across Iran. Among them was Khamenei’s compound in Tehran, along with key military facilities nationwide.

On Sunday, the Israeli military said the initial wave of strikes had opened what it described as a “path to Tehran” after destroying air defence systems in western and central Iran. However, officials warned that many targets were still intact.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later said attacks on the capital would be intensified.

Verified videos from Tehran showed thick plumes of smoke rising over the city on Saturday. BBC Verify also analysed satellite images taken that morning, which revealed significant damage to part of the Leadership House compound — the office of Khamenei. The images match verified footage filmed on the ground after explosions rocked the area.

Additional images indicate that the Narmak neighbourhood, where former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad lives, was also hit. Another strike targeted the area surrounding Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence.
