Cruise’s surname derives from his great-grandfather, who was from Thomas Cruise O’Mara and was renamed ‘Thomas Cruise Mapother’ (Mapother is a Welsh surname). Cruz is of Irish, German, and British descent.
Cruise began acting in high school and made his film debut in Endless Love (1981). He played supporting roles in films such as Taps (1981) and The Outsiders (1983) before playing a high school senior in Risky Business (1983) who turns his parents’ home into a brothel.
