    The film “Sholay” was released on August 15, 1975. This film was directed by Ramesh Sippy. Action, drama, romance, comedy, and tragedy were everything in the film. Much of Sholay was filmed on the rocky terrain of Ramanagara, a town near Bangalore, Karnataka.

    Not only the story of this film was liked by the people, but the characters of the film are also alive in the minds of the people to date. 

    The scenes of this film are such that people still like to watch them. While some dialogues of Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan, and Dharmendra were such in the film that even today people listen to them and smile on their faces.

    Sholay is often considered one of the greatest and most influential Indian films of all time. In 2005, the jury at the 50th Filmfare Awards voted it the best film of the last 50 years.

    Amitabh was not the first choice for Jai

    In this film, the pairing of Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra impressed the fans a lot. The film was shown to be so friendly that the pair of ‘Jai and Veeru’ became a hit. But do you know Amitabh Bachchan was not the first choice for the role of Jai? 

    According to media reports, this role was offered to Shatrughan Sinha. Amitabh also wanted to play this character. In such a situation, there were many reasons that the makers chose Big B for Jai.

    2.50 crore budget, earned 30 crores

    The film ‘Sholay’ was a low-budget film. According to media reports, its budget was around 2.5 crores. But as soon as this film was released, it earned a lot at the box office and proved to be a blockbuster film. 

    Sholay earned about ₹150 million in net income (valued at about US$16,778,000 in 1975) in India during its first run, which was many times its’ ₹30 million (valued at about US$3,355,000 in 1975)budget. Box Office India estimates the film’s total footfall in India as over 100 million tickets sold.

    In this film, apart from Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, the roles of Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, and Amjad Khan were killed. Amjad Khan played such a role of ‘Gabbar’ in this film that even today people know him more by the name of the film than by his real name. 

    Some of the film’s scenes and dialogues achieved popular status in India, such as “Kitne Aadmi The” (How Many Men Were There?), “Jo Dar Gaya, Samjho Mar Gaya” (Who’s Scared Is Dead), and “Bahut Yarana Lagta Hai” (Looks Like You Two Are Very Close) dialogue of Gabbar Singh.

    Sholay has received many “Best Film” honors. The film was named Film of the Millennium by BBC India in 1999. It was ranked number one in the British Film Institute’s 2002 poll of the ‘Top 10 Indian Films of All Time’ and was voted Best Indian Film in a 2004 Sky Digital poll of one million British Indians.

    It was also included in the magazine Time‘s “Best of Bollywood” list in 2010, and in IBN Live’s list of the “100 greatest Indian films of all time” in 2013.
