Matthew Perry’s upcoming memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” contains a handful of revelations, including Perry walking out of a movie after his heart stopped for five minutes, but perhaps the most shocking of all. Volley throws a pair of Perrys at the partner actor Keanu Reeves. At two points in the memoir, Perry questions why Reeves is still alive when “genius” actors and “original thinkers” such as River Phoenix and Chris Farley have tragically died.
“The list of talents who were ahead of their time is too long to detail here – suffice it to say, near the top of any such list is ‘A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon,’ which is mine in River Phoenix is the costar,” Perry writes.
Perry later added, “River was a beautiful man, inside and out—too beautiful for this world, it turned out. It always seems like really talented people go down. Why is it that Phoenix River and Heath Ledger? People like original thinkers, die. , but Keanu Reeves still walks among us? River Phoenix was a better actor than me; I was funnier. But I definitely put myself into my scenes—no small feat, when I look back decades later I see.”

Keanu Reeves was referenced again when Matthew Perry wrote about the death of comedian Chris Farley. “His disease progressed faster than mine. (Plus, I had a healthy fear of the word ‘heroin,’ a fear we didn’t share),” Perry writes. “I punched a hole in Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room wall when I found out. Keanu walks between Reeves. Two weeks after his death I had to promote ‘Almost Heroes’; I found myself publicly discussing his death from drugs and alcohol. I was high the whole time.”
“Friends, Lovers and the Big Bad Thing” are available for pre-order now and for release on November 1st. Other revelations in the book include Perry admitting that he spent nearly $9 million on their collective efforts to stay sober and Perry revealing that he nearly died of an opioid overdose in 2018.
