Taliban Restrictions Forced the Team Into Exile

The Taliban’s ban on women’s sports prevented the Afghan women’s cricket team from competing internationally under Afghanistan’s national flag.

Most of the players have since left Afghanistan and rebuilt their lives in Australia, where they continue training and playing cricket while hoping to represent their country again one day.

Exhibition Matches Raise Global Awareness

The team travelled to England to play exhibition matches during the women’s cricket season.

The players said the matches are about more than sport. They also want to raise international awareness of the restrictions facing women and girls in Afghanistan.

Ekil Latifi Shares Her Journey

Team member Ekil Latifi fled Afghanistan in 2021 when she was 17 years old.

She said the team represents millions of Afghan women who cannot participate in sports, continue their education, or enjoy many basic freedoms.

Latifi now works as a cricket coach and hopes the Afghan women’s cricket team will eventually regain official recognition and compete internationally.

Dream of Representing Afghanistan Again

Latifi said her biggest ambition is to play under Afghanistan’s national flag, just as the men’s cricket team does today.

She described cricket as a symbol of resilience, hope and determination rather than simply a sport.

Players Welcome Royal Recognition

Player Shabnam Snahsan said meeting King Charles was an important moment for the team because it demonstrated international support for Afghan women.

She explained that women in Afghanistan continue to face severe restrictions on sports, education and everyday life.

The players said they hope their story encourages the global community to continue supporting Afghan women.

A Memorable Meeting at Clarence House

During the visit, the players presented King Charles with a signed team shirt and an Afghan Women’s XI badge.

The King spoke with them about their journeys from Afghanistan, the languages they speak and the dangers they faced while escaping Taliban-controlled areas.

The meeting also included a light-hearted moment when Ekil Latifi, who is learning English, jokingly asked the King to teach her a “posh” English word, prompting laughter from everyone.

Despite the cheerful conversation, the players said their greatest goal remains unchanged—to represent Afghanistan officially and play international cricket for their homeland once again.
