A Woman Died in a Sad Accident on a Swiss Mountain
Something very bad happened on Mount Titlis in the Engelberg ski resort in Switzerland. A 61 year old woman from the area died when the gondola she was in broke loose. Fell down the mountain that was covered in snow.
The Gondola Came Off in Very Winds
This happened on Wednesday at around 11 in the morning in the Nidwalden area. Local police say the Titlis Xpress gondola detached from the cable for unknown reasons. Eyewitnesses Felt Pure Terror
There are videos online that show the gondola flipping over and over and falling through the air before hitting the snow. One person who was skiing told Nau.ch what they saw. They said “My mother looked at me and said ‘Look a gondola is falling.’ She heard it hit the ground. Saw the whole thing happen.”
The Winds Were Too Strong
The weather was very bad. The wind was blowing hard at over 80 kilometers per hour. This is much stronger than the 60 kilometers per hour that usually means the gondolas do not run. One person said “The gondolas were swinging back and forth like crazy because of the strong winds.” A 14 year old boy named Beren Akkaya was at a ski camp nearby. He told Blick he was very shocked and too scared to ride the gondola down.
People Helped Right Away
The people who help in emergencies got to the scene quickly. They used airplanes and ambulances and the police to get to the place where the gondola fell. They had to walk through deep snow. The woman was alone in the gondola. She did not survive the fall.
The Cable Car System Stopped Right Away
The people in charge of the ski lifts were very upset.
