Dresden Evacuation: 18,000 People Leave City Centre After WWII Bomb Discovery

The city of Dresden in Germany will have a part of its centre emptied on Wednesday. This is because workers discovered a big unexploded World War Two flying bomb. The bomb is really big. Weighs 250 kg. Workers discovered the bomb near the Carola Bridge, which fell into the Elbe River in 2024.

The Dresden fire brigade says this will be the evacuation the city has ever had for something like this. It will affect a lot of people around 18,000 residents, tourists and commuters.

Police will close off large parts of the town by 09:00 in the morning. This includes some of Dresdens famous places like the Frauenkirche Lutheran Church, the Residenzschloss Palace and the Semper Opera House. The area that people have to leave also includes government buildings, like the police headquarters and the Saxony state parliament. Authorities will also close some ministries, retirement and nursing homes, daycare centres, and other facilities. Know More

Dresden was bombed a lot by planes on 13 February 1945 during World War Two. After that British and American forces dropped a lot of bombs on the city. This caused a fire that killed about 25,000 people and destroyed much of the city centre. The city centre used to be really beautiful with its buildings.

Workers found four other World War Two bombs last year while tearing down the Carola Bridge. The bombing of Dresden is still something that people argue about today. Some people think it was the thing to do while others think it was very wrong. Read More
