Cristiano Ronaldo will leave Manchester United with immediate effect

Cristiano Ronaldo will leave Manchester United “with immediate effect”, Premier League clubs said on Tuesday.

After the 37-year-old forward’s contract expired, he gave an explosive interview in which he criticized manager Erik ten Hag and the club’s owners.

It was not immediately clear where he would end up after failing to move to a Champions League club in the summer.

“After discussions with Manchester United, we have mutually agreed to terminate our contract early,” Ronaldo said. “I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never change. However, it seems like the right time for me to take on a new challenge.

“I wish the team every success for the rest of the season and for the future.”

Ronaldo is currently in Qatar with Portugal as he aims to win his country’s first World Cup title. Had previously made it clear that he was content to be reduced to a minor member of the squad this season and later Wants to transfer.

His wish came true on Tuesday with United’s move confirmed.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving Manchester United by mutual consent with immediate effect,” the statement read. “The club thanked him for scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances in two spells at Old Trafford. The club wishes him and his family all the best for the future.”

The statement did not reveal United’s disappointment following Ronaldo’s unofficial interview with Piers Morgan.

The Portugal captain said he felt “betrayed” during the 90-minute debate, in which he also criticized the young players.

His contract was widely expected to be canceled last week after United said it had taken appropriate steps in response to his comments.

He won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, and the first of his five Ballon d’Or crowns before moving to Real Madrid in 2009.

Ronaldo’s return to United from Juventus last year was greeted with much fanfare by the club’s supporters, but his second spell at Old Trafford failed to match the success of his first as United finished trophyless last season.

“After discussions with Manchester United, we have mutually agreed to terminate our contract early,” Ronaldo said in a statement.

“I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never change. However, it feels like the time is right for me to take on a new challenge.

“I wish the team every success for the rest of the season and for the future.”
