South star Surya and Bobby Deol’s film ‘Kanguva’ was released in theatres on Thursday amidst a lot of hype. The trailers and promotional material of this latest pan-India film from the Tamil industry looked very powerful. People were also excited for Surya, who was coming with such a big film in Hindi for the first time. But no one had even guessed the way the film performed on the very first day.
People were expecting a great visual experience from ‘Kanguva’, but the film disappointed a lot in this regard. After the first show of the film, people’s word of mouth started becoming negative about the film, and the shortcomings of the film were also pointed out in the reviews. This has had a direct impact on the box office, and ‘Kanguva’ did not get even half the opening expected. The film did have a solid opening in the Hindi version, but here too there is a twist in the story.
The fire of ‘Kanguva’ cooled down on the first day itself
Advance booking for Surya’s film started very strongly. The booking, which started late, got such a response from the very beginning that expectations of the film business from ‘Kanguva’ started increasing. It was estimated that this film would collect in the range of Rs 60 crore in India on the first day.
However, the film did not even collect half of the estimated collection on the first day. Trade reports suggest that the negative atmosphere of ‘Kanguva’ has had such an impact that the film’s opening is not even half of the estimated collection. The opening collection of ‘Kanguva’ has been less than Rs 30 crore, and it may remain limited to Rs 25 crore till the final figures are out.
The record is broken in Hindi, but there is a twist in the story
Trade estimates also say that ‘Kanguva’ in Hindi has collected more than 3 crores on the first day. According to the figures, Surya’s film has got a bigger opening in Hindi than Tamil star Thalapathi Vijay’s ‘Leo’, Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vikram’, and Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’. In fact, this is the biggest opening of any Tamil film in Hindi after Rajinikanth’s film ‘2.0’ released in 2018. But there is a twist in the story here.
‘Kanguva’ is a bigger release than the Tamil pan-India films that have been releasing in Hindi for some time now. Many big Tamil films were not able to get a big release in Hindi due to not accepting the condition of keeping a gap of at least 8 weeks between the theatrical release and the OTT release of the films. But ‘Kanguva’ accepted this condition, and it got a big release even in the national multiplex chain theatres of North India.
Reports suggest that the number of screens that ‘Kanguva’ has in Hindi is very close to 3000. In contrast, the screen count of the film at the Indian level is close to 6000. According to this screen count, the opening of Kanguva is very dull. The film needs to do something big on the weekend to earn a lot.
