Japans Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said on Friday that Japan needs to talk about how Japan can defend Japan against modern threats. Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting Shinjiro Koizumi talked about how fast military technology’s changing. He said that during the Russia–Ukraine conflict drone technology got better in a few weeks, which he said was very fast. Because of this change Japan must think carefully about how Japan develops and buys new defense technologies.
Shinjiro Koizumi also said that the U.S. Military plans to buy least one million drones over the next two to three years. This big purchase he said, shows how seriously countries are taking the role of drones in warfare and why Japan must think about how to respond to drones.

The Defense Minister also said that Japans Self-Defense Forces have started getting U.S.-made Tomahawk missiles and Norway’s Joint Strike Missiles. These weapons are part of Japans plan to make Japans “standoff” defense capability stronger. Which allows missiles to be launched from away.
Shinjiro Koizumi said that Japans defense improvements are only for Japans self-defense. According to him, Japan will only use capabilities like standoff missiles if another country attacks Japan.
